Importance of Hearing, Feeling, Touching, and Seeing in Baby's Development

At the point where the baby is beginning to recognize members of his family by sight, he will begin to form other associations that will relate images with sounds and touch sensations. Thus, seeing a faucet with water running from it, turning the faucet on and off, feeling the water, and hearing it run will help the child form a concrete concept of faucet and water.

Seeing and feeling certain objects or living things can help a child associate noises and functions with their appropriate source, for example, a dog barking, a horn honking, and water running. These experiences are part of continually broadening the child’s visual experiences. Hearing, feeling, and touching experiences provide important clues that help the child better define what he sees.

1. Help the baby to have daily experiences with familiar objects inside and outside the home, objects and living things that are part of his community, and common things outside his community.

2. Make certain that the child encounters the object or living thing in at least three ways: seeing it, touching or handling it (assuming it won’t harm him in any way), and hearing the sound it makes.

3. Any time a part of the experience is missing, the child’s concept of it will be incomplete. It is very easy for the youngster to develop inaccurate or even false ideas about something. If, for instance, a child’s only experience with dogs is with a St. Bernard, he won’t likely perceive the “dogness” of a Mexican Chihuahua.

4. The parent should make every effort to keep the child’s encounters with things as real as possible. Let’s suppose a mother wants her child to learn about ducks. Her first effort should be one of trying to bring ducks to the child or taking the child to a place ducks can be seen. If neither of these alternatives are available, she should collect a variety if illustrations that show what ducks look like (a variety of illustrations that show what ducks look like (the variety of their size and color) and how big they are compared with the child and other things he is familiar with. The baby will then need to touch and handle feathers to know what ducks feel like, and he will need to know what they sound like. (“Quack, quack” is not a sufficient imitation of the sound ducks make.)

5. Some of the experiences or encounters the child should have include such things as household pets, farm animals, zoo animals (especially those at children’s zoos), appliances such as vacuums and blow combs, furnaces, skateboards, bicycles, pots and pans, watches and clocks, tea kettles, car motors, windshield wipers, a car horn, and a variety of musical instruments.

6. Remember that the more numerous the child’s experiences are, the better his preparation will be in learning to deal with the real world inside and outside his home. When each of the child’s experiences are complete in the sense that he sees, hears, and touches, the more accurate his concepts will be.

Even though the small child may not see color and is really attracted to strong contrasts or movement, the experiences he has with bright colors are still important.

If the child is between the ages of two months and 2 1/2 years, experiences with color are an important part of his visual development. Along with providing the baby with a variety of touching experiences, a parent should add slow movement and brightly colored objects to his day-to-day teaching regime. Just as numerous experiences with hearing stories and looking at pictures even before he can talk assist in preparing the child for reading, so do experiences with color begin the development of his visual discrimination. Brightly colored mobiles moving slowly overhead, brilliant red rattles, and colorful appliques seen against newtral backgrounds are the kinds of visual experiences the baby ought to be having daily.

Experiences with color will be a need of the child into adulthood, but the sort of color environment described above will no longer be needed when the child starts to distinguish one color from another. From the time of birth, a child is instinctively pushing into his mouth everything he gets hold of. His tongue and lips have a desire to feel things. His sucking instinct is inherent and you will see him sucking his finger or hand. Many mothers will put a pacifier into his mouth right away to keep him from sucking his thumb. Upon the arrival of my first baby, I swore that she would never have a "dirty old pacifier" sticking our of her mouth. (She,of course, ended up sucking her thumb and being quite a fussy baby.) But when the second baby came, I gave him the pacifier almost immediately. He was a much happier and contented baby than his older sister because I had provided something for him to touch, feel and suck on. When teething time came and his little gums began to swell, he liked to bite on something hard because it felt better. A teething ring or even a clean finger works very well at this stage.

Next, the baby begins to handle objects with his own hands---holding onto a finger, his bottle, or the end of a blanket. Apparently the child finds some sort of pleasure in touching or kinesthetic experiences. The baby is unable to perceive details of any sort. He is in the earliest stages of "learning to see." By sight he cannot distinguish among members of his family. He cannot follow movement with his eyes. He is frightened by unexpected sounds or movement. He finds security in circumstances simulating the time when he was still being carried by his mother. This developmental level will largely consume the first year of his life and will continue in some aspects on into his kindergarten years.

Throughout the first year of the child's life or until he takes the initiative, place a variety of textural materials into his hands. Be certain that none are harmful or small enough to swallow. Let him hold onto such things as clean fingers, plastic rattles, blankets, diapers, and rubber bones. Place the child in changing environments throughout the day so that he has a variety of visual ezperiences. Talk to him and play with him throughout his feeding and while you are changing his diapers and clothing. All of these things are as important to the baby's early perceptual development as stories are to his reading readiness.

Before a child no longer needs the kinds of experiences described above, a variety of other needs will have developed. Kinesthetic experiences to some degree or another will be important to the child at all stages of his development but are particularly crucial through the primary years. I've seen kindergarten and first grade teachers even use sand or shaving cream on a table so that the children can use their fingers to feel their numbers and letters. (The shaving cream is a good cleaner for the table when they're done.)

Do Babies Worry or Do We Worry For Them?

As adults we spend a lot of time worrying. We either worry about money and finances, the impression we make on other people, our health, our futures, or hundreds of other events in our lives. How young are we when we start to worry? Do babies have the mental capacity to worry?

I grew up in a fine home and really wasn’t a worrier as a kid. In fact I had a poster on my dorm room wall in college that read:

Why worry?
Either you’ll live or you’ll die.
If you live, you have nothing to worry about.
If you die, you have only two things to worry about.
Either you’ll go to heaven or to hell.
If you go to heaven, you have nothing to worry about.
If you go to hell, you’ll be so busy shaking hands with your friends that you won’t have
time to worry.

When I look back in time, I was rather naive about real life as a kid. But I was full of faith and hope that everything would turn out okay. In fact, I am still full of faith and hope, but I realize that we have to push ourselves and help ourselves to make things happen. We can’t rely entirely on other people.

How young are we when we start to worry? It’s hard to say, but I suppose a lot of it depends on experience and environment. Toddlers are taught through a lot of “no-no’s”. Some of them may worry about what will happen if they do what they’re not supposed to and others may just go ahead and do it to see what really happens. This is called learning by experience and the more experiences they have, the more they learn. Of course, we don’t want them to be in danger, but they must be instructed carefully about the dangers around them without having to experience those consequences.

A child’s environment can cause him a lot of anxiety. First of all, he needs to feel safe. He needs to have enough to eat. He needs the feeling of being loved. In other words, he needs to be taken care of by responsible adults. Teachers at school can have a huge impact upon a child’s feelings.

Now back to the question of whether or not babies have the mental capacity to worry. We know that from the time of birth a baby cries when something is wrong (but they also cry when nothing is visibly wrong). A baby can’t tell us what he’s thinking, so we have to do the thinking for him and act accordingly. But does he actually worry about something that may happen in the future or is he programmed to only think in the present?

On my wall hangs a cross-stitched sampler which reads “FRIENDSHIPS LIKE FLOWERS NEED TENDING TO BLOOM”. Isn’t this true with many things in life?

A rosebud begins to open because its bush has been well tended by weeding out the bad stuff, feeding it the good stuff with soil and minerals, and seeding that soil with plenty of moisture. A baby, like the rosebud, begins his life with his mother cleaning up the bad stuff, feeding him the good stuff, and nurturing him with love and affection.

In time, the rosebud opens a little wider because it has experienced the right environment to promote growth and well being. Also, in time, the infant grows and becomes more than just a baby. He begins to have a personality. He laughs and coos, takes notice of his surroundings, recognizes his favorite people, and begins to get around by himself.

At last the rosebud blooms and is able in all of its glory to present its true color and beauty to the world. On the other hand, the baby becomes a toddler and is just beginning to present his true colors and beauty to the world. At this toddler stage the child is really starting to bloom. He talks, runs, screams, laughs, makes-believe, and in all the while he is learning, learning, learning.

The true color of the rose in full bloom is ever so radiant. But in a short time the color fades and the petals fall. It takes the timeless efforts and guidance of parents, grandparents, teachers, and peers to bring a child from the infant stage into full bloom. I've found that babies love to chew on hard objects at teething time. When they are unable to put something in their mouths, they can be quite uncomfortable and fussy. They'll try biting on anything (even your fingers).

Living on a Montana ranch, gives me many opportunities to see nature at work. My indoor activities include managing my website http://www.babyblanketbabe.com . But my outside activities also have to do with babies. Yesterday we had a mother coyote wander into our sheep pasture as she was hunting food for her hungry babies. Young lambs usually make a tasty main course for a coyote family. When I saw her, I jumped on the 4 wheeler and raced to see what was going on. I came over the ridge and, to my amazement, about 20 lambs were closing in on a wide-eyed coyote running for her life!

We take precautions and are careful to protect our babies, but do our babies have more survival instinct than we realize? What do you think?
